Derek raised his hands halfway, palms showing, but his mouth would not stop. \u201cThis is absurd. She\u2019s being dramatic. Ask anybody. She invents things.\u201d<\/p>\n
Officer Miller moved closer while his partner, Officer Elena Ruiz, stepped toward me and Dr. Rhodes. The room felt packed now, crowded with uniforms, clinic staff, and the sharp scent of antiseptic. I wanted to vanish beneath the exam table, but Nurse Callie kept her hand steady beside my shoulder.<\/p>\n
\u201cMadison,\u201d Officer Ruiz said softly, crouching low enough to look into my eyes. \u201cCan you tell me whether you feel safe with him here?\u201d<\/p>\n
My throat tightened shut.<\/p>\n
Derek gave a laugh. \u201cShe can\u2019t even answer because she knows\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n

Derek\u2019s mouth closed at once, but his eyes stayed fixed on me. Cold eyes. Warning eyes. The kind that had taught me to say the correct thing before anyone could step in.<\/p>\n
Dr. Rhodes was the first to speak. \u201cShe does not feel safe. I recorded injuries today. I also heard him threaten her. Multiple staff members heard it too.\u201d<\/p>\n
Derek\u2019s face flushed red. \u201cYou\u2019re breaking privacy laws.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cNo,\u201d Dr. Rhodes said. \u201cI\u2019m reporting violence.\u201d<\/p>\n
Officer Miller turned Derek around and locked handcuffs around his wrists. The click of the metal was quiet, but it divided my life into two separate parts: before and after.<\/p>\n
Derek twisted his head toward me. \u201cMom is done with you after this.\u201d<\/p>\n
I flinched.<\/p>\n
Officer Ruiz saw it. Her expression hardened. \u201cTake him out.\u201d<\/p>\n
As they guided him through the doorway, patients and staff watched from the hall. Derek tried to keep his posture proud, but his hands were trapped behind his back, and for once, he had to move where someone else ordered him to move.<\/p>\n
The second he was gone, I began shaking.<\/p>\n
Not sobbing. Not screaming. Just shaking so hard my teeth clicked together.<\/p>\n
Dr. Rhodes ordered X-rays for my ribs. Nurse Callie helped me into a wheelchair because standing made white sparks flash behind my eyes. Every movement tugged at the fresh stitches, and shame burned hotter than the pain. I kept whispering, \u201cI\u2019m sorry,\u201d even though no one had blamed me for anything.<\/p>\n

My mother, Linda, worked night shifts as a dispatcher and acted like she did not see how Derek controlled the grocery money, my car keys, my phone, my clothes, even the people I was allowed to talk to.<\/p>\n
He called it discipline.<\/p>\n
I called it breathing behind a locked door.<\/p>\n
